Magnet Hill is the fifth Sanctuary location located in EarthBound, found in Fourside outside of the sewers in the Dinosaur Museum. It is guarded by the Plague Rat of Doom.

A man near the north wall hints that this is a Your Sanctuary location by saying that it doesn't feel like it's his place, but Ness's place. In this sanctuary is a box with the Carrot key needed to access Pink Cloud in Dalaam.

Layout

It is required to go into the sewers in order to reach Magnet Hill. After entering from the Dinosaur Museum, it is mainly a winding path to the east in three segments, and a dead end left of the entrance. Entering the sewage itself is needed to go around the hazmat barrels blocking the path. In the second area is a room where a Magic Butterfly appears regularly. At the far end is a ladder which will lead to the Pague Rat of Doom and Magnet Hill.

History

After recieving a call from Mr. Spoon in the Scaraba Cultural Museum in Summers, Ness and his party meet him as he tells of his discovery, but will only allow Ness in upon bringing Venus's autograph. Once Ness gives him the autograph on a banana peel, he is let into the sewers to find what the discovery was at the end, but is warned about the Plague Rat of Doom beforehand. The team manage to successfully defeat the Plague Rat of Doom who is revealed to have been the Sanctuary Guardian of Magnet Hill. Outside, Ness witnesses a short vision of a baby's bottle. Ness then collects the Melody of Magnet Hill, then obtains the Carrot key which will allow the team to reach Pink Cloud.

Trivia

  • It is possible to skip obtaining the Melody by moving as close to the lower wall as possible, then collecting the Carrot key and leaving. Collecting this Melody last, however, does not automatically activate the Sound Stone and send Ness to Magicant as normal, which results in a Sound Stone that plays all Eight Melodies without doing anything else. The player would then need to revisit one of the other Sanctuaries that can ordinarily be obtained last in order to properly reach Magicant.
