Peaceful Rest Valley is a location in EarthBound connecting Twoson to Happy Happy Village. It is a large valley which winds through hills and trees, and past rivers, lakes and waterfalls. It is widely seen as a difficult area to navigate due to the confusing maze-like layout, and for having rather strong enemies for early game which can inflict status ailments or explode upon defeat.
Its name in the Japanese version is "Grateful Dead Valley," which was altered in localization to avoid mentions of the word dead and similar words, and legal issues with the band after which it was named.
Geography
Peaceful Rest Valley spans between Happy Happy Village in the east, and Twoson in the west. The path mostly runs along the riverbank, three bridges are used to traverse across to the other sides of the rivers. Normally there is a bridge that skips a good portion of the valley, however during the player's first visit it is broken and thus trekking the long way is required. In the midde section the path loops around the northern side of the hill before crossing over the hills to the opposite side. The path eventually reaches an open area where it passes the bridge that would normally be used to skip the northern portions of the valley.
The bridge to the east of there crosses to the side of the river where Happy Happy Village is located. From there it continues north towards a slope leading up the hill, while on the hill the cabin where Paula is being held is visible on the right side. After continuing south it will reach a cave leading to Happy Happy Village.
History
The first time the Ness passes trough here, a bridge near the entrance will be broken, forcing the player to take an alternate path where a strange, pencil-shaped object will be blocking the road. This forces him to backtrack to Twoson, where, upon arriving, Apple Kid will invent the Pencil Eraser to remove the obstacle and allow entry to Happy Happy Village.
Within the valley there is a cabin where Paula is being kept. She gives Ness the Franklin Badge knowing it will help him stop Mr. Carpainter. Outside, Ness is ambushed by Porky who tries to stop him using a Spiteful Crow and two Insane Cultists, however Ness is able to easily defeat them. After being given the key from Mr. Carpainter, Ness successfully rescues Paula and the two travel back to Twoson together. The bridge will be fixed, making a more straightforward path between Happy Happy Village and Twoson.
