Phase Distorters are three types of machines found in EarthBound. They are made by Dr. Andonuts, and can time travel.

The second phase distorter is taken to somewhere. In this area, there is a Mr. Saturn claiming to have been left there.
Phase Distorter 3
The third Phase Distorter is made while the Party is in the place the second one take them to. It can take them to Giygas, but will destroy anything live. Because of this, the team is put into robots to survive the process.
