Deep Darkness is a swampy location in EarthBound, located in the Chommo region south of Scaraba.
Overview
Deep Darkness is accessed by heading south from the Scaraban desert using Dungeon Man's yellow submarine. The swamp is first entered from the north, where there are small business. A thick darkness surrounds the swamp, as such the Hawk eye is essential for getting through the Deep Darkness. Access to the inner parts of Deep Darkness is from the east, which then goes south then continues west in a zig-zag pattern. At the south western end the path begins to go north, before looping east then west to the end.
Some parts of Deep Darkness are deep enough that walking in them makes party members lose HP for lack of oxygen. Because of the difficult conditions, Deep Darkness is mostly uncivilized. The only ones who live there are the Tenda tribe living in Tenda Village at the end of the swamp.
Role in EarthBound
After traveling underwater via the yellow submarine, Ness and his friends Paula and Jeff arrive in Deep Darkness. Because of the darkness, they need to use the Hawk Eye to travel through the swamp.
Along the way they meet Master Belch, who is now stronger and changed his name to Master Barf. During the fight, Poo arrives with his newly-learned PSI attack PK Starstorm, raining down stars and finishing Master Barf off once and for all. Finally, they reach the end of Deep Darkness and arrive at Tenda Village.
